NEWS: MUGABE: SA NOT AS FREE AS OTHER COUNTRIES IN REGION

The Zimbabwean president was reacting to criticism from African National Congress secretary-general Gwede Mantashe.

HARARE – President Robert Mugabe says that South Africa is not as free as other countries in the region.

The Zimbabwean president was reacting to criticism from African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, who Mugabe described as foolish.

This was a marked escalation in the war of words between Mugabe and Gwede Mantashe.

Earlier this week, the ANC secretary-general accused Mugabe of destroying Zimbabwe’s economy. He said that he’d complained to ZANU-PF over Mugabe’s recent criticism of Nelson Mandela.

Speaking at a funeral in his country last month, Mugabe criticised Nelson Mandela again, saying the former president made too many concessions towards the white minority.

But Mantashe was not impressed. He said he told the ZANU PF Secretary General to speak to Mugabe.

He called on Mugabe to Refrain from making statements that are “unresearched”

On Thursday, Mugabe hit back, accusing Mantashe of acting foolishly.

In comments carried by state media, Mugabe said that South Africa wasn’t as free as other countries in the region because those who imposed apartheid still controlled resources.

Mugabe’s criticism of the ANC and Mantshe comes shortly after his wife, Grace Mugabe, was granted Diplomatic Immunity late last month after allegedly attacking a woman in South Africa.
