Granit Xhaka a doubt for Switzerland World Cup squad after training injury

Granit Xhaka’s place in Switzerland’s World Cup squad is in doubt after the Arsenal midfielder picked up an injury in training.

The Swiss FA confirmed Xhaka had to stop training on Thursday after injuring his knee in a duel.

He was not sent to hospital and was instead treated and examined by the physio at the team hotel.

A statement on the Swiss FA website said Xhaka reported feeling pain on the outside of his left knee and will be sent for an MRI scan before any further update on the injury is given but they have told Sky Sports: “It is too early to say if he will miss the tournament in Russia”.

Xhaka is part of coach Vladimir Petkovic’s 26-man preliminary squad which also includes Stoke midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri and Arsenal target Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Switzerland play Spain in a warm-up match on June 3, live on Sky Sports.

They begin the World Cup against Brazil on June 17, before facing Serbia and Costa Rica in group E.
