Suspected hijackers nabbed after they crash into tow truck

Three suspected car hijackers – two of whom were identified as having escaped from Zwelitsha – were arrested by Eastern Cape police on Saturday after they lost control of the hijacked vehicle and collided with a tow truck.

The vehicle‚ a navy blue Toyota Avanza‚ was allegedly hijacked at Empilweni Clinic in the Buffalo Flats area by three armed suspects.

“The vehicle was circulated by radio control and while travelling along Settlers Way‚ East London K9 Unit‚ King William’s Town K9 Unit and East London Flying Squad pursued the vehicle.

The suspects lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tow truck.

“Three male suspects between the ages of 32 and 36 were arrested. Two of the suspects were identified as those who escaped from Zwelitsha. One 9mm Norinco pistol and R5 ammunition rounds were recovered‚” police said.

A case of hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition had been opened‚ they said.

The suspects would appear in court soon‚ police added.
