Causes Of Arab Spring

Arab Spring is a protest or war both violent and non violent that started in December 2010 in Tunisia and later spread to Libya, Yemen, Syria etc. It can also be referred as Arab Revolutionary or Democracy Spring.

What Led To Arab Spring.

There are many causes of the Arab spring in 2010 and each of the causes states the state at which the Arab states were  before the spring.

However, the major cause of the Arab Spring is Mohammed Buoazizi. On 17th December 2010, a police officer seized the unlicensed property that belong to Mohammed Buoazizi. When he tired to pay fines, they rejected his fines. He also appealed to the local municipality officials which also denied his request. Frustrated and hopeless, he set himself on fire  which triggered widespread protest in Tunisia and finally led to Arab Spring.

Other causes of the spring were:

  1. Violation of human right
  2. Failed economic policies
  3. Oppressive and Authoritarian political system
  4. Socially alienated mainly youths
  5. Inflation
  6. Unemployment
  7. Kleptocracy
  8. Demographic structural factors
  9. Sectarianism

The economic situation in the Arab spring affected countries more due to the 2008 Economic Crisis. This was because the states in Arab have mostly gotten independence by 1950s. So the economic process used by the regime were not so good enough in creating sustainable competitive economic.

Arab Spring caused the exile of Abidine Ali and his government was overthrown. Egypt president, Hosni Mubarak was arrested, charged and his government was overthrown. Also, Muammar Gaddafi was killed following civil war that saw a military intervention.

In order words, the 2011 and 2012 phase of Arab Spring was successful. This was because the authoritarian government in Tunisia, Egypt, and Yemen was overthrown in protest ranging from peaceful to violence.
